GABAA receptor kroz prošlost i budućnost farmakologije – priča o GABAA receptorima i našim izuzetnim naučnicima

Historical perspective and emergence of the GABAA receptor in pharmacology - the story of GABAA receptors and our remarkable scientists
On September 19, 2025, at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Belgrade, a mini-symposium was held on the occasion of 80 years of the Faculty of Pharmacy and 86 years of pharmacy studies, entitled GABAA receptor: veni, vidi, sanavi.
We had the privilege of listening to some of today's greatest names in the field of pharmacology and learn about the discovery and elucidation of the structure of the GABAA receptor and the development of drugs that act as positive allosteric modulators of these ionotropic receptors.
The lecturers were Dr. Andrija Sente, who was declared the best young researcher in the field of Life Sciences, Dr. Jovana Aranđelović, our young scientist and head of the CoD-GOAT project, and prof. Dr. Miroslav Savić. For the first time in history, a drug in whose discovery participated a scientist from Serbia - full professor Miroslav Savić, received approval from the FDA to start clinical trials in 2024.
The lecturers talked about the configuration of subunits in the receptor that determines the functional response, about 19 genes that encode GABAA receptor subunits in the human body, and about ligands that exert their effects by modulating these pentameric ion channels.
In anticipation of new lectures and symposia, we look forward to days dedicated to science, knowledge, socializing and networking.
